Armed Forces of Ukraine May Suspend the Counteroffensive: ISW Experts Named the Reason

The Armed Forces of Ukraine may temporarily suspend the counter-offensive in order to reconsider their tactics for future operations.

It is reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to the ISW report .

Thus, Colonel Margo Grosberg, head of the Intelligence Center of the Estonian Defense Forces, said that, according to his assessment, we would not see an offensive in the next seven days.

In turn, the Wall Street Journal reported that Ukrainian units for the most part suspended their offensives in recent days, as the Ukrainian command is reconsidering tactics for further military operations.

These reports are consistent with recent ISW observations regarding the scale and approach of local counterattacks by the Armed Forces of Ukraine in southern and eastern Ukraine. ISW experts have previously noted that the Ukrainian command has not yet sent most of the available forces to the counteroffensive and has not yet deployed its main combat-ready units.

According to analysts, operational pauses are a common feature of major offensive operations, and this pause does not mean the end of the Ukrainian counteroffensive.

Key takeaways from ISW:

  • Ukrainian troops continued counter-offensive operations in at least four sectors of the front and achieved limited territorial successes.
  • EU countries are accelerating the supply of weapons to Ukraine.
  • Russian President Vladimir Putin reportedly backed a proposal by Russian bloggers to set up a working group within the Presidential Administration, likely in an attempt to integrate them into the pro-Kremlin media space.
  • Russian troops carried out limited ground attacks north of Svatovo and south of Kremennaya.
  • Russian sources claimed that Russian forces continued to repulse Ukrainian counter-offensive operations in the western part of the Zaporozhye region.
  • The Russian occupation authorities continue to prioritize the treatment of Russian military personnel in occupied Mariupol, which is reportedly significantly increasing the civilian death rate in the city.

Counteroffensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine

In the first weeks of June, Ukrainian troops intensified offensive operations in the east and southeast of Ukraine. The Armed Forces of Ukraine managed to liberate seven settlements in Zaporozhye and Donetsk regions.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that the offensive of the Defense Forces of Ukraine continues in three directions – Berdyansk, Mariupol and Bakhmut. Ukrainian military have some success.

According to Reuters, the military leadership of Ukraine involved in the counteroffensive 3 out of 12 trained brigades , and therefore we can assume that the main battle is still ahead.
