Britain to Keep Sanctions in Place Until Russia Pays Compensation to Ukraine

The British government announced the inclusion in the legislation of the country of a clause on the basis of which sanctions against Russia will remain in force until Moscow pays compensation to Ukraine.

It is also reported that the authorities are developing a mechanism that will allow individuals under sanctions to donate their frozen assets to the restoration of Ukraine, the BBC Russian Service reports .

These steps are taken ahead of a large-scale international conference on the restoration of Ukraine, which will be held in Britain this week.

“As Ukraine continues to defend itself against a Russian invasion, the dire consequences of Putin’s war are clear. Ukraine’s needs for reconstruction are enormous. With our new measures today, we are strengthening the UK’s position on the issue of sanctions. We reiterate that through sanctions we want to ensure that Russia paid to rebuild a country it unjustifiably attacked,” Foreign Secretary James Cleverley said on Monday.

Britain significantly expanded anti-Russian sanctions in February 2022 – after the start of a full-scale Russian invasion.

In May, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said that London had already imposed sanctions against more than 1,500 Russian individuals and entities.
