MFA Demands Consul Access to Ukrainian Prisoners of War in Hungary

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine demands that the consul be allowed to see the Ukrainian prisoners of war, whom the Russian Orthodox Church handed over to Hungary without consent.

This was reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to the press secretary of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Oleg Nikolenko .

According to him, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Coordinating Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War and other involved bodies of Ukraine continue efforts to return home 11 Ukrainian prisoners of war, whom Hungary, without the knowledge of the Ukrainian government or international human rights organizations, took out of the Russian Federation.

Nikolenko said that all attempts by Ukrainian diplomats in recent days to establish direct contact with the Ukrainians were unsuccessful. In addition, data received from the relatives of some of them indicate that the assurances of the Hungarian authorities about the supposedly free status of the defenders do not correspond to reality.

“In fact, they are kept in isolation, do not have access to open sources of information, their communication with relatives takes place in the presence of third parties, they are denied contact with the Ukrainian embassy,” the speaker wrote.

At the same time, attempts by the Ukrainian side to establish a constructive dialogue with the Hungarian authorities are ignored by official diplomatic channels.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasizes that such actions of Budapest cast doubt on the humanitarian motives declared by him for the export of Ukrainians to Hungary. In addition, they can be qualified as a violation of the provisions of the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms.

“The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry once again appealed to the Hungarian side with a demand to immediately allow the Ukrainian consul to the Ukrainian prisoners of war, so that he could assess their physical and psychological condition, tell them about their rights, and provide urgent consular assistance,” Nikolenko wrote.

Ukraine is waiting for the return of our fighters and is ready to provide them with maximum assistance in reuniting with their families and providing the necessary rehabilitation.

Russia hands over Ukrainian prisoners of war to Hungary

Informed sources told RBC-Ukraine that the Russian Orthodox Church wants to transfer 11 Ukrainian prisoners of war to Hungary . However, the decision was not agreed with Ukraine.

On June 8, the press service of the Russian Orthodox Church published a message stating that this “transfer took place at the request of the Hungarian side.” Later in Hungary they confirmed the transfer of prisoners from Russia to them .

Later it became known that the Hungarian ambassador was summoned to the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry due to the fact that the Russian Orthodox Church handed over a group of Ukrainian prisoners of war to the country without consent.
